How Google Treats Subdomains and Subdirectories in 2016
Interested in finding out how Google treats subdomains vs subdirectories in 2016? Read this article and discover all information you need to know!
If you are familiar with subdomains or subdirectories, you probably have heard the popular SEO debate on using subdomains and subdirectories. We can say that the SEO debate on using subdomains vs subdirectories is probably one of the things that will never end. John Mueller from Google in Google Hangout said that at the end of the day it really doesn’t matter that much. According to John, Google does a really good job discovering what you are trying to do is it really doesn’t matter that much when it comes to subdomains vs subdirectories. He said that unless you have to present huge numbers of subdomains you will be fine.
The question that we all want an answer to and the question that was presented to John was – How you treat subdomains? For example, if we have 5 similar topics but they are different enough to be put in separate folders, should you use subdomains? Does using subdomains affect the SEO ranking?
Here is what John had answered – The using of subdomains would not affect the SEO ranking in general. Google recognizes that some websites use subdomains as a totally different part of the website. In the same time, the website might also use subdirectories. The main thing you need to consider and to pay a close attention to is not to use wildcard subdomains as you can make crawling, extremely, but extremely difficult. Google will have to go through all of your subdomains and treat each subdomain as a separate host. It is recommendable to have a limited number of subdomains so it will be easier for Google to do the job.
It is similar if you have different websites that are completely separated sites but they are in subdirectories or in folders. Google will experience troubles as well as they will try to figure this out as well and determine, for instance, these websites are all on the same domain and on the same hostname but perhaps they are use-generated content or separate websites that Google should treat completely separately. It is challenging for Google sometimes to figure this out, especially if there are confusions related to subdomains or subdirectories.
To sum things up, this will not hurt or improve your SEO ranking. It is more a matter of Google figuring things right. So, far the Google algorithms do an amazing job at that, so we don’t experience any troubles at all. Google, is after all, smart enough to know how to treat subdomains or subdirectories. However, it is a good thing to be informed.
